Where to Begin

So there really is a “fist step” when it comes to hiking and backpacking. And that is literally to get out and take that first step.

Unless you exercise regularly, putting on a backpack loaded with your gear and hitting the local trails for the weekend (or even over night,) is asking for trouble! There needs to be some kind of prep to backpack camping as far as physical conditioning goes.

I am NOT, nor will I ever be, a fitness “guru”! But the simplest way to START to get into shape for a backpack adventure is simply get out and start walking! Walk the dog. Walk laps at the Mall. Walk around the neighborhood after dinner to burn off the extra piece of dessert you scarfed down! Just GET OUT and walk!

If you are starting from “0”, start small. A few blocks around the neighborhood or what have you, and then slowly build up from there. This will have the added advantage of helping build a stronger heart, and may even help you loose a few pounds. A fitness watch is a good investment, but not required. Your phone is probably already tracking your steps daily, and will work for the basics! (I know the iPhone series has the “HEALTH” app on it which tracks steps (though not 100% accurate) as well as steps climbed.) You don’t need to wear hiking boots or running shoes to do this either. Just comfortable shoes (to start) that you know you can walk in without getting “hot-spots” or blisters.

Over time, you can slowly increase your distances walked. You will begin to feel better as you do. If you’re planning a backpacking trip in the future, now would be a good time to switch from regular shoes to your hiking boots. (I prefer “over the ankle” boots, and will discuss that later.) Just so you can get used to the boot, and check for wear on your feet.

Once you’re walking two or three miles at a time easily, it’s time to bump it up a notch! Adding a small backpack, with a water bottle or two, a light jacket, or something to just add a little weight when you’re walking will help you get ready for your trips to the back country! But you don’t need to walk the neighborhood with you full rucksack to get ready! This is just about getting you started on hiking. Not for ascending Mt. Everest!

***IMPORTANT***
As with anything exercise related, if you have any health concerns, please consult your personal physician before beginning any exercise or training program. While hiking and camping can be a great way to get into shape, or help stay healthy. You should never ignore underlying health risks, regardless of your age or exercise intentions.

This is just the beginning!

We have a long way to go! But getting out there and taking that first step, is literally the first step you need to take!

Enjoy!
